Leadership in Colleges and Universities

"Many...people have graduated from...leadership doctoral programs that tend to take a multidisciplinary approach to leadership studies. This new trend in leadership studies brings with it promising breakthrough in our understanding of leadership. The study has been mired in a single disciplinary view for most of the twentieth century; the leadership studies approach allows scholars and practitioners to think radically new thoughts about leadership that are not possible from a unidisciplinary approach."
Excerpt from Leadership for the Twentieth Century; Joe Rost (1991), pg. 2.

The following is a listing of graduate and undergraduate degree programs which are related to the study of leadership (in the U.S., primarily).

Caveat: This list is not comprehensive. There are SEVERAL academic programs related to specific areas of leadership--e.g. public leadership, nonprofit leadership, organizational leadership, business leadership, health care leadership, sports leadership, educational leadership, human resource leadership, environmental leadership, etc. Also, the Masters programs listed do not include MBA programs, although several, if not most, MBA programs have specializations or programs in leadership.

Lindsey,
I feel like I hit the jackpot when I came across your blog. I am a faculty member who is in the process of seeking UPCC approval for introducing a global leadership concentration on our campus. I was looking for a list of colleges and universities who offer leadership studies programs as well as articles to support housing this proposed program in an interdisciplinary program. Your blog has provided me with both - many, many thanks!

Debbie,

I'm glad that you found the resources on my blog to be useful! I hope that you are able to get the approval for the new concentration...programs in Leadership often have a tremendous impact in the lives of undergraduate students--especially in the development of individual abilities, and global competencies.

Best!

Hi Lindsey, thanks for creating a blog like this. I'm an MBA Candidate at National University but am interested in going on for a PhD in Org Leadership. This list and your blog are very good initial resources for me. Thanks and best of luck to you!

PS: Have you heard anything about National University potentially getting that Doctorate in O.L.?

Hi Sung Kim,

Thank you for the comment. And, I haven't heard anything about National University developing a PhD program. However, I hope that you are able to find a program that suits your interests. There are many Organizational Leadership programs around. And, even if you want to stay in Southern California there are at least two in the area.

Best wishes in your studies!
Lindsey

There is a new program that I came across when I attended a doctoral education conference a few weeks ago.

It is called the Rose Leadership Institute and they have this innovative certificate program. I believe it is called the Geoleader Certificate Program (www.roseleadershipinstitute.com)

I know that several of the corporate sponsors at the event were interested in this leadership development program as it is completely online which they are now more in favor of for their employees.
